J. Raymond Meyers, Tenor
A multitalented artist. J. Raymond Meyers is well known and highly
regarded as a consummate performer of lyric and character tenor
roles. He performs extensively in concert, recital and opera. Recent
appearances in operas have included the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto
with the San Francisco Lyric Opera. For Opera Santa Barbara, the tenor
has sung the roles of Goro in Madama Butterfly, and Beppe in I
Pagliacci.  After being spotted at Opera San Jose singing the role of the
drunken yet lovable Bardolfo in thier 2001 season's Falstaff , Mr.
Meyers was invited to audition for San Francisco Opera  which resulted
in covering Bardolfo and also lead to subsequent covers of two more
roles during their 2002 season. Mr. Meyers returned this past spring to
Opera San Jose to sing Alfred in Die Fledermaus. As one of many
appearances in the role of Alfred,  his most recent  performance
garnered this review, "as Alfred, the stereotypical Italian tenor, J.
Raymond Meyers showed a flair for comedy. The role also gave him a
chance for the interpolation of snatches of several operatic arias that
exploited his vocal abilities."

Last season, Mr. Meyers debuted with the Stockton Symphony as
tenor soloist in Orff's, Carmina Burana. A favorite at Sacramento Opera,
the tenor has sung the Witch in Hansel and Gretel, as well as Tybalt in
Romeo and Juliet in the spring of 2004. Previous assignments there
have included Goro, Bardolfo and the Four Macabres in Offenbach's
The Tales of Hoffmann. In the summer of 2002, Mr. Meyers sang his first
concert with the Tahoe Music Festival showcasing his ability to sing
some of the more lyric repertoire. He was featured singing arias and
duets from Madama Butterfly and La Boheme. He also performed in a
benefit concert for Opera Santa Barbara last spring singing arias and
duets from   La Boheme. The Santa Barbara News Press hailed, "Mr.
Meyers is well known in San Francisco Opera circles, and both voices
brought shouts of bravo, bravo with everyone on their feet
applauding." Mr. Meyers returned to Anchorage Opera this winter to
sing Pang in their first ever production of Turandot. He made his debut
there in 1996 and has been seen there as Remendado, Borsa, Gaston
and as Mercury in Orpheus in the Underworld. This season also
marked Mr. Meyers' debut with the Portland Opera, singing the role of
Tony in the west coast premiere of Bolcolm's, A View from the Bridge.
A resident of San Francisco, he has sung numerous leading roles with
several bay area companies. He made his debut at Davies Symphony
Hall in 1999 singing the Shepherd in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex. The
tenor recently sang Carmina Burana with the Santa Cruz Symphony,
"Tenor J. Raymond Meyers performed with power and surety." He
made his Diablo Symphony debut in the same role in 2003. Mr. Meyers'
most recent CD is entitled: Heinrich Schutz: A Musical Portrait.
Recorded with the Santa Cruz Bach Festival under the direction of
Nicole Paiement, it has been released under the Helicon Records label.

Upcoming operas and concerts for the busy tenor include:
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Santa Cruz Symphony as well
as the Sonoma Bach Choir, Carmina Burana with the Modesto
Symphony and the San Jose State University Orchestra(his alma
mater), a concert of arias and duets benefiting the Stockton Opera with
soprano Krista Wigle under conductor Peter Jaffe and the Stockton
Opera Orchestra, an opera concert with the Monterey Opera, and this
summer, Mr. Meyers makes his debut with Utah Festival Opera singing
Giles Corey in the Crucible and the Emporor in Turandot.
